Who we are What we do Forthcoming events Email Home
The Burgundian Cadence is a virtuoso acapella vocal quartet specialising in the music, both sacred and secular of the 14th and 15th centuries. We are currently exploring the influences on and of the English composer John Dunstaple (1390 - 1453). In our concerts we include works from the Old Hall Manuscript, an important collection of English music assembled around 1415, and later works by Dufay, Binchois, Ockeghem and other composers associated with the Court of Burgundy. We have also explored contemporary music, in the form of a setting of the St John Passion, composed for us by Robert Hugill. Our performance style uses improvisation and ornamentation, which we believe was a wide spread practice in medieval and renaissance times. We perform from one large score, in the manner of medieval singers, as shown in images of that period.
The Burgundian Cadence has made a CD of English Medieval Christmas Music: a mix of carols and the Sarum chant for the "Cockcrow Mass" of Christmas Day.
